- History:
- I have always enjoyed Halloween and haunted houses. I have fond memories of my teen years, when I would spend hours on makeup just to get a good scare. The fun turned from hobby to obsession at about age 13 when I helped out on a church haunted house. I continued dabbling in makeup and special effects, and studied the work of great makeup artists like Tom Savini, Dick Smith, and Rick Baker.
In 1991, I designed and operated 2 rooms in the Mexico Jaycees Haunted Theatre. The site was the old Liberty Theatre, a Mexico landmark which has since been destroyed. I can remember freezing my butt off every night and yelling until I was hoarse, and doing it all for free. The funny thing was, I loved every minute of it. I knew at that point that I had to take things further.
Starting with Halloween of 1994, I began my tradition of home haunts. With the help of my close friends and family who share my love for the holiday, we created the "Dungeon of Terror" haunted house in my garage. In '94, '95, and '96 the haunt was limited to a private Halloween party each year for friends and family. In 1997 we decided to start letting Trick-or-Treaters experience our haunt. It was received with great enthusiasm. On Halloween night in 1998, over 100 people passed through our haunted gates. We did it all for free and still had great fun. I can remember having to shut down because word was getting around town and people were starting to arrive by the carload. That tends to make your neighbors dislike you. In 1999, I formed Haunted Productions and we presented our final "Dungeon of Terror" home haunt at my house. This was a private party haunt.
Finally, in 2000 Haunted Productions opened our first commercial haunt. In May of 2000, we opened Castle Gifts & Game Room at 119 S. Washington in downtown Mexico. I entered into a partnership with friends and family. The location also served as the production offices for Haunted Productions. This time we called the haunt simply "The Dungeon". Without even advertising at all, we drew large numbers. The haunt was open on Friday and Saturday nights in October as well as October 30th and 31st. For our first commercial effort, the haunt was a great success. We also kept the admission price low, because we feel that a good time doesn't have to cost a fortune.
The future of Haunted Productions is limitless. HAUNTEDPRODUCTIONS.COM became a reality in November 2000. We operated our "Hallowed Grounds Haunted Scream Park" during the 2001 season and in 2002 we moved to a different location to add a hayride and corn maze. We were the first haunted attraction in our area to have a corn maze attraction. In 2003, Hallowed Grounds once again opened to rave reviews and proved to Missouri that haunts can be more than just radio hype. In 2004, Hallowed Grounds returned to what made us popular, by offering a huge outdoor venue with a large haunted house and lengthy haunted trail. For 2005, expect more of the great fun and scares that you've come to expect from Haunted Productions and our ScreamTeam. We constantly visit other haunted attractions, theme parks, and conventions, researching new ideas and keeping up on the latest technology. Our ScreamTeam actors group is second to none, and they are what sets our event apart from all the others. You can travel to bigger cities and see tons of fancy sets and animatronics, but it's just not the same. If you want to tour a museum, buy a ticket from one of those attractions. If you want some good old fashioned fun and scares, then come see us! Although few admit it, we like to be scared. That rush of adrenaline; the pounding heartbeat; the uncertainty about what lies around the next corner. It's one of our most primal emotions. As long as there are people who are searching for that rush, HAUNTED PRODUCTIONS will be there. As you explore this website, please feel free to contact us for further information on any of our activities. We look forward to seeing you at our next haunt. Halloween in Mexico, Missouri will never be the same.
