History:
Do you believe in souls? Or perhaps a part of us that “lives” on after our physical bodies have expired. There is something that separates us, makes us different, a “spark of life” that makes us who we are. Many great men and women have pondered this question and still do. Ours is the story of one of those men. A tragic story that, as yet, has never ended. About two hundred years ago, a wealthy young plantation owner and businessman, Tobias Dread, moved to this area. Soon after arriving, he met his future wife and began construction on a new plantation and home. The site Tobias had chosen for his new home was a place feared by locals as it was said to be haunted or cursed. Others told stories of how strange rituals had occurred there when a long vanished people had inhabited the area. Regardless of the superstitions, the land was cheap and plentiful. Business called Tobias overseas, and he had to leave his new bride along with their most precious possession, a very young son. Even though the new home was not finished the business was urgent. It was a cold bleak morning in Europe when the news reached Tobias. Tragedy had struck the young Dread family. Their young son had disappeared. Tobias must return home immediately. It took many months to reach his bereaved wife. By then she had gone completely mad. Ranting about ghosts and spirits and how her son had been taken from her. “Who just disappears?”, she would scream. She met her loving husband at the door, noose around her neck, swinging from the chandelier. A devastated Tobias had his wife’s body immediately packed in salt and herbs, then sealed in a pine box. He loaded his macabre cargo onto a wagon and set off toward the Mississippi River Delta. He recalled strange tales from his childhood nannies about Voodoo priests who had brought the dead back to life. One member of his family had been lost to him, his son. He would not lose another. Not while there was a hope to bring her back. As he traveled Tobias kept a journal, writing down and trying to remember everything he could about death and the afterlife, cheating death and even eternal life. Tobias had become obsessed with notions of life and death and with the powers of nature that bind life to afterlife. Why do we have to die? Is there something after death? And the one question that plagued his thoughts every waking hour, “Could someone come back?” North, south, east and west, Tobias travels took him from one side of the globe to the other. Studying one science and religion after another. Many years and a vast fortune Tobias spent on his quest, no, his crusade. In Egypt he came face to face with mummies and mummification. African spirit conjurers, European alchemist and even Transylvanian vampires where some others Tobias studied. The new biological sciences had shown some promise as well. Electrical current applied to dead tissue seamed to reanimate it. A young medical student had discussed the possibilities with Tobias on a train ride somewhere. The young Frankenstein had shared lab equipment designs that just might work. The old religions and the new science, a key to unlock the door, Tobias thought. One final ingredient Tobias believed he needed. An ancient place he had stumbled across while in Transylvania, the ruins of a castle. Built by a God/King who had ruled the land for years beyond that of one man’s lifetime. The king was assassinated but never truly died. He came back as some undead thing. Drinking the blood of his victims to sustain his life. It was this ruined place of power that Tobias acquired and had shipped back to be rebuilt. Stone by stone the castle was rebuilt. Occupying the very spot where Tobias’ partially complete house now stood. The two became one. As the castle was being rebuilt, many strange and bizarre occurrences took place. A fever had gripped the entire work crew. They toiled as if they were possessed. There were disappearances of workers in the middle of the night, and numerous accidents that took the lives of many others. Apparitions of the long dead wife of Tobias were reported by local townspeople. The lady in white they called her or Lady Dread. There were even reports of Tobias performing strange rituals on the castle grounds and inside the structure itself. What should have taken years to complete only took months. Where a humble home once was now stood Castle Dread. It was Halloween eve when the last stone was placed and the castle was complete. The workers left that “dreaded” place, all of them living with the fear, panic and madness at the thought of what they might have unleashed upon themselves and maybe the world. Halloween night came, and as the town slumbered Tobias stood looking at the front gates, looking upon his castle, his home. He walked past the cemetery filled with those lost to reconstruction and other loved ones. He walked past the monument to his wife and son, entered the front door of his new home and was never seen again. Some years have brought brave souls to investigate the castle. Most have never made it back to report their findings. The others were so stark raving mad as to make no sense at all. Is there an undead evil that lies within the walls, trapping all souls the dare enter the gates? Do you dare enter to find the answer? Are you brave enough to try? Tobias Awaits!
