History:
At the Landon House, our theme is “Create Your Own Legend”. The Landon House was built along the Rappahannock River in Virginia as a silk mill in 1754. It was relocated to Urbana, Maryland in 1840 where it became The Shirley Female Academy and then the Landon Military Academy & Institute. It was during the Confederates’ first Maryland campaign that Landon would make history as the host site of legendary Confederate cavalry General J.E.B. Stuart’s famous ball on September 8, 1862 The Sabers and Roses Ball remains one of the highwater marks of the Confederacy since immediately following the ball all romantic notions of the Civil War ended at the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American History. The house served as a hospital for both Union and Confederate troops and still has original signed and dated Civil War “lightning sketches” on the walls, drawn by Yankee and Rebel soldiers These portraits of American Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, along with General Robert E. Lee, bear silent witness to American and Maryland heritage. Landon is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a featured stop on Maryland’s Civil War Trails program.
