Nike has just announced a new line of Freddy Krueger themed tennis shoes. I am sure this news is going to make some of you very excited because you don’t mind giving money to a mindless corporate enterprise who knows how to market to suckers. But for my money no matter what your political beliefs are these shoes are just plain Fugly. And I also just want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Freddy Krueger was, is and never will be real. I liked the Nightmare On Elm Street film(s?) as much as anyone, but I don’t think anyone needs to identify themselves with a made-up character from a horror movie as if he was Che Guevara or something. But I am that guy that never buys a band shirt with the images of the band members on it. I can enjoy something without letting my adoration for it be a component of my personality. But I love horror and write about it everyday. So i guess i am a little bit of a hypocrite. The difference comes when a company like Nike hopes that I am a big enough sheep that I will shell out $120 (or whatever the reasonable dollar amount is) to let everyone know that I like horror. “Hey I like horror. You can tell because I am wearing Freddy Krueger tennis shoes from Nike!” If it was from an actual horror brand then that’s a different story, but Nike? don’t be a chump.
